Evaluation and Correlation of Serum Biomarkers in COVID-19 Positive Patients with and without T2DM

Abstract

Background: Extensive research indicates that diabetics are more prone to various infectionsanddiseasesthantheirnon-diabeticcounterparts.IndividualswhotestpositiveforCOVID-19exhibit elevated levels of several biomarkers. Thus, the present study seeks to evaluate andcomparevarious biomarkersinCOVID-19positivepatientswith andwithout diabetes. Materials and Methods:A total of 100 subjects in the age groupof20-50 years were divided into two groups. 50 COVID-19 positive non-diabetic subjects and 50 COVID-19 positivediabetic subjects.Serum Fasting Glucose was measured by GOD-POD Enzymatic method;Serum LDH via IFCC Enzymatic kinetic method; Serum CRP was measured by FIA method;Serum ferritin and Serum IL-6 through Chemiluminescence technique; and D-Dimer by FIAmethod. Results: Serum biomarkers such as serum CRP (5.16±2.28 VS 14.86±5.94): Serum ferritin(66.12±33.06 VS 184.44±71.83) and D-dimer levels (0.29±0.10VS2.35±0.97) were found to be significantly lower in Non – Diabetic COVID groups compared to COVID patients withDiabetes respectively. serum fasting glucose (114.38±6.36 VS 151.24±9.99); LDH(204.92±52.06VS287.64±71.15);Interluekin-6(23.34±10.15 VS38.44±17.62)werealso significantlyhigherinCOVIDpatientswithdiabetes. Conclusion: The current study suggests serum ferritin, IL-6, plasma D-dimer, and LDH, aresignificantly increased in COVID-19 patients with diabetics in comparison to COVID-19-positive patients without diabetes and these values can be used in risk stratification COVID-19 positive.
