Extraction of Protein from Astragalus armatus and its Ability to Bind to N-acetylglucosamine Residues

Abstract

Lectins are carbohydrate binding proteins of non-immune origin with the ability to recognise special carbohydrates. This study aimed to demonstrate the ability of Astraglus armatus protein to bind in a specific manner to N-acetylglucosamine Residues. First, we demonstrate that Astraglus armatus protein can specifically bind to GlcNAc residues, second, we have extracted lectin from Astragalus armatus, moreover the determinated the isoelectric point and hemagglutinating activity were determinated Lastly, the ability of Astragalus armatus protein to bind to GlcNAc residues was confirmed by Inhibition of hemagglutinating activity by different carbohydrates.N-acetyl-galactosamine is part of the Tn antigen that has been related with malignancy, metastasis and bad prognosis in cancer. thus, this protein from Astragalus armatus roots may be of interest for targeting cancerous cells.
