Abstract

Peri-urban forest ecosystems, such as the June 19 forest in the Bouzaréah massif, see their forest resources, particularly medicinal plants, seriously threatened by repeated fires and strong social pressure. The aim of this article is to contribute to the inventory of medicinal plants and to gather information on the practical uses of phytotherapy in the June 19th forest. We carried out 23 phytoecological surveys based on subjective sampling, supplemented by an ethnobotanical survey involving 50 stakeholders. The results revealed the existence of 142 species belonging to 39 botanical families and 115 genera. Analysis of the medicinal value of this flora has identified 116 medicinal species, i.e. 82% of the total flora, including 24 toxic medicinal species. The ethnobotanical study revealed the existence of 41 medicinal species used by the local population. It has also been shown that the majority of medicinal species are mainly used for digestive disorders and skin ailments (26.83%). Leaves (49.34%) are the most commonly used plant organ, while decoction (36.59%) is the most widespread method of preparation among the local population in the study area.
