Formulation and Characterization of Pycnogenol Emulsion from Pine Extract as Supplements for Anti-Melanogenic Activity

Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop a phytocosmetic emulsion with anti- inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial effect with a blend of phenolic and flavonoid that enhance the extract of plant. This study evaluated the efficiency of different emulsion formulations of PINUS extracts. Procyanidins and phenolic acids are the main ingredients in pine bark extracts. By removing reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and reducing the generation of peroxides, pine bark extract functions as an antioxidant. By raising the amounts of intracellular glutathione, it enhances the activity of antioxidant enzymes. In addition to enhancing NO production, which causes vasodilation, pine bark extract also suppresses production of adhesion proteins that promote inflammation and atherosclerosis by blocking NF-kB activation driven by tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha). Pine bark is being used to create a new product that may mitigate the adverse effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy for cancer patients. A patented mixture of bioflavonoids obtained from pine bark is called pycnogenol. Research has shown that Pycnogenol®, an extract of maritime pine bark (Pinus pinaster), has several beneficial effects on health due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities. These bioflavonoids combine with vitamin C to strengthen the immune system. Pycnogenol may have a specific function in fortifying capillary walls, which aids in minimizing inflammation, according to data. Pine bark contains bioflavonoids that may also help fight cancer. In numerous malignant cell lines, including those from ovarian, prostate, leukemia, and breast cancer cells, clinical investigations on Pycnogenol® have demonstrated this drug's anticancer effectiveness. Researchers found that Pycnogenol® inhibited the growth of ovarian and breast cancer cells and was an effective treatment for enlarging the prostate. Pycnogenol metabolites ®'s also show anticancer activity in a variety of human cancer cell lines, which is an intriguing feature about the supplement. Pycnogenol® is a naturally occurring dietary supplement that is well-tolerated and has a high oral bioavailability.
