Background :Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is defined as a neuropsychiatric syndrome resulting from liver insufficiency and more often in patients with cirrhosis. It is caused by the build up of neurotoxic substances in the blood stream targeting the functions of the brain. In the case of cirrhotic patients, it is important to ascertain factors that may precipitate HE as it will help in the care of these patients to avoid the occurrence of recurrent episodes. Objectives :The purpose of this study is to identify the prevalence of constipation as a cause of hepatic encephalopathy in cirrhotic patients admitted in the Department of Gastroenterology of Ayub Teaching Hospital. Study design: A cross-sectional study.
