Functional Outcome of Extra Articular Distal Femur Fractures Operated With Dflcp Plating V/S Imsc Nailing

Abstract

Introduction - The treatment of distal femoral fractures has evolved although these fractures remain complex to treat and carry an inconsistent prognosis. Two most commonly used techniques are intramedullary Supracondylar nailing and minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis with distal femoral locking compression plate (MIPO DFLCP). In this article authors try to evaluate and compare the clinical, radiological and functional outcome of extra articular type A distal femur fracture fixation using retrograde IMSC nailing and MIPO DFLCP plating and also to assess the Post operative recovery in terms of early mobilization, weight bearing and to rule out any complications with each technique. Material and method - The study was carried among 30 patients of type A distal femur fractures in which 20 are operated with MIPO DFLCP and 10 are operated with IMSC Nail and were followed up for minimum period of 6-9 months and evaluated clinically using knee society score as well as radiologically for union and also to look for any other complications. Results–Results were assessed based on radiological union, knee society score and ability to return to daily routine, overall mean knee society score 86±10 which was excellent, among which mean knee society score in patients operated with DFLCP was 85 ±12 and that of IMSC was 80 ± 8, union time of 4.5±1 month in DFLCP and 6.5 ± 1 month in IMSC nailing. Complications include Wound dehiscence, screw back out in case of DFLCP while non-union and nail back out in IMSC.
