Abstract

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a prevalent gastrointestinal disorder that significantly affects the quality of life, particularly among healthcare workers (HCWs) due to occupational stress, irregular meal patterns, and shift work. Despite its impact, limited data are available on GERD prevalence among HCWs in Pakistan. Objective: This study aimed to assess the prevalence, severity of GERD symptoms, and its impact on the quality of life among HCWs. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Medical Teaching Institute Khalifa Gul Nawaz Teaching Hospital, Bannu, from August 1, 2023, to July 30, 2024. A total of 110 HCWs were recruited using a convenient sampling technique. Data on GERD symptoms were collected using a standardized questionnaire, and quality of life (QoL) was assessed using the SF-36 Health Survey. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 26, with a p-value <0.05 considered significant. Results: The overall prevalence of GERD was 90.9%, with heartburn (59.1%) and regurgitation (49.1%) being the most commonly reported symptoms. GERD was more prevalent among smokers (25.5%) and those with 1–5 years of work experience (45.5%). Participants with GERD had significantly lower QoL scores in physical functioning, mental health, and social functioning domains (p < 0.05). Conclusion: GERD is highly prevalent among HCWs and significantly impacts their quality of life. Workplace interventions focusing on lifestyle modifications, stress management, and dietary counseling are recommended to reduce GERD symptoms and improve overall well-being.
