Growth, development and biochemical characteristics of young cocoa trees aged 0-24 months following mineral fertilizer applications in south-central Côte d'Ivoire.

Abstract

In the search for solutions to the difficulties of replanting cocoa trees on non-forest land in Côte d'Ivoire, mineral fertilizer formulations have been developed. In order to determine their effects on the growth, development and biochemical characteristics of young cocoa trees, tests were carried out in the Lôh-djiboua region, at the Centre National de Recherche Agronomique (CNRA) research station. The experimental setup was a Fisher block with five treatments (T0 (no input), T1 (Urea-TSP MOP-CaCO3-MgSO4-ZnSO4-H3BO3), T2 (Urea-TSP-MOP-CaCO3-ZnSO4-H3BO3), T3 (Urea-TSP-MOP-CaCO3-MgSO4-H3BO3), T4 (Urea-TSP-MOP-CaCO3-MgSO4-ZnSO4)) and three replicates. Average height, crown diameter, crowning rate, mortality rates, flowering, fruiting, chlorophyll pigments (Chla, Chlb and Chlt), carotenoids, phenolics, total sugars, proteins and proline were the agronomic parameters measured. Treatments T1, T2, T3 and T4 were highly expressive. The means of the parameters assessed were statistically significant at the 5% level, except for total sugar content. From 4 to 12 months after planting, the highest heights were obtained with treatment T3. However, at 18 months, T4 (261.6 cm) and 24 months, T1 (285.3 cm) produced the tallest trees. At the same time, the largest collar diameters were obtained with the T3 treatment at 4, 12 and 24 months. Crowning was early for all fertilizer treatments. Almost all the trees in the fertilizer treatments were crowned after 24 months. The same was true for flowering and fruiting. Treatment T4 produced more chlorophyll, protein and phenolic compounds. However, the highest levels of proline were obtained with treatment T2. These results allow us to recommend successful replanting of cocoa trees on non-forest precedents.
