IMPACT OF NICKEL AND LEAD STRESS ON THE ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITIES OF JUSTICIA ADHATODA

Abstract

This study explores the in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Justicia adhatoda extracts under Nickel and Lead stress. Hydroalcoholic extracts from Justicia adhatoda were subjected to various assays to evaluate their antioxidant potential, including the DPPH method and Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma (FRAP) assay, along with IC50 value determination. Additionally, the antimicrobial efficacy of the extracts was assessed against Bacillus subtilis and Salmonella bongori. The results revealed that control group extracts exhibited robust antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, with lower IC50 values and significant inhibition zones. In contrast, Nickel-treated extracts showed reduced antioxidant and variable antimicrobial activity, while Lead-treated extracts demonstrated either maintained or enhanced antimicrobial properties at higher concentrations. These findings highlight the complex impact of heavy metal stress on the bioactivity of Justicia adhatoda, suggesting potential alterations in its therapeutic efficacy under metal exposure. The study underscores the need for further research to elucidate the specific mechanisms of plant-metal interactions and their implications for medicinal applications.
