In recent years, there is an increasing trends in research of bioactive compounds extracted from various herbs and aromatic plants. Roots of Vetiveria zizanioides are widely used in treating fever, dysuria, burning sensation, fatigue, skin diseases. Vetiveria zizanioides root is a medicinal plan t with well documented pharmacological properties. The present study focussed on analyzing the phytoconstituents from aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Vetiveria zizanioides along with its anti microbial properties. The investigation revealed the presence of various phytochemicals like carbohydrates, proteins, saponins, alkaloid s, tannins, phenolic compounds, anthraquninones, coumarins, phlobatannins, tri terpenoids, flavonoids, quinones, resins, gums and mucilages, amino acid, cardiac glycosides, steroid , terpenoids and anthocyanins etc . Antibacterial activity against selected bacterial pathogens were determined by agar well diffusion method (inhibitory zone). It was found that the bacterial growth inhibited significantly at higher level than the aqueous extract. Activity indices were also determined and the present investigation will support the local application of the plant. It has been used as in ethnopharma cological medicine to treat plentiful properties containing with good aroma. The antibacterial properties and phytochemical profiling of Vetiveria zizanioides firmly support their application in the development of various products, especially in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries
