Abstract

In sericulture, the status of health of the larval instars of silkworm, Bombyx mori (L) exert influence on the quality and quantity of silk yield. The present attempt tried its best to utilize Forskolin through suitable solvent through the topical application to the fifth instar larvae of silkworm, Bombyx mori (L) Race: bivoltine double hybrid [(CSR6 x CSR26)] x [CSR2 x CSR27)] at forty-eight hours after the fourth molt. Four different concentrations of acetone solution of Forskolin include: 25 mg per liter (25 ppm), 50 mg per liter (50 ppm), 75 mg per liter (75 ppm) and 100 mg per liter (100 ppm). The acetone solution of required strength was prepared by addition known quantity powder of Forskolin in known volume of acetone. Ten milliliters of acetone solution of Forskolin were used for topical application to the group of hundred larvae. Shell Ratio of cocoon spun by fifth instar silkworms of solvent treated control group, 25 ppm Forskolin; 50 ppm Forskolin; 75 ppm Forskolin and 100 ppm Forskolin were recorded 19.360; 24.017; 28.021; 28.076 and 28.360 units respectively. Denier scale of silk filament spun by fifth instar silkworms of solvent treated control group, 25 ppm Forskolin; 50 ppm Forskolin; 75 ppm Forskolin and 100 ppm Forskolin were recorded 3.250; 4.715; 4.936; 5.267 and 5,204 units respectively. Forskolin deserve applicability in sericulture, may be through accelerating rate of synthesis of silk.
