Investigating the correlation among maternal hypothyroidism,placental characteristics and Neonatal well-being: A cross-sectional observational study in a tertiary care hospital

Abstract

Hypothyroidism affects approximately 2-3% of pregnant women worldwide. The thyroid hormone plays a crucial role in fetal development particularly in organogenesis and metabolism. The placenta serves as a key interface between the maternal and fetal circulations, playing a critical role in nutrient exchange, waste removal and immune modulation. Histopathological features such as villous architecture, trophoblast proliferation and vascularization can be altered in hypothyroid pregnancies reflecting the impact of thyroid hormone deficiency on placental development. Aims and objectives:1.To characterize histopathological patterns in the placenta of hypothyroid mothers2.To investigate the impact of maternal hypothyroidism on neonatal health outcomes. Materials and Methods: Thirty five placentas of hypothyroid mothers were received in formalin with detailed clinical history including maternal age, gestational age, mode of delivery, pregnancy complications, baby weight and APGAR score of the baby. The specimen were allowed to fix in neutral buffered formalin for a period of 48 hours. The placentas were then examined by recording macroscopic and microscopic details. Results: The Mean Maternal age of our patients were 31 years. Preterm labour and premature rupture of membranes were the common maternal complications with hypothyroid mothers.Low birth weight and small for gestational age were common neonatal complications.CD68 was expressed in higher numbers surrounding the fetal vessels.
