Abstract

In 2020, an unexpected pandemic occurred after the detection of certain pneumonia cases of unknown etiology in Wuhan city, Hubei province, China. On January 7, 2020, the etiological agent was detected and found to be a novel coronaviridae, named COVID-19 later termed SARS-CoV-2. Further analyses indicated that SARS-CoV-2 is the seventh member of the coronaviridae family, which includes SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV as highly pathogenic members. To contain the outbreak and halt the subsequent human-to-human transmission, surgical mask use and symptom monitoring were implemented in Wuhan. The WHO declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on January 30, 2020, and on March 11, 2020, upgraded it to a pandemic [1].
