Neuroinflammatory Responses to Microbial Infections in the Central Nervous System: Implications for Disease Pathogenesis

Abstract

This study aimed to elucidate neuroinflammatory responses associated with microbial infections in the central nervous system (CNS). We investigated the impact of such infections on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cytokine levels and brain tissue inflammation, focusing on identifying key inflammatory markers and their relationship with disease severity. A cohort of 400 patients with CNS infections (Group A) and 400 healthy controls (Group B) was examined. We employed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) to measure cytokine levels and immunohistochemical staining to assess histological changes. Results revealed significantly elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6) in Group A, coupled with decreased IL-10 levels, compared to Group B. Correlation analysis demonstrated strong positive associations between these cytokines and disease severity. Histological findings confirmed increased microglial activation and macrophagic activity in infected individuals. These results underscore the critical role of inflammatory processes in CNS infections, highlighting the need for targeted therapeutic strategies to modulate these responses and mitigate disease severity.
