Objectives Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance, impaired insulin secretion, and high blood sugar levels. Prevention focuses on healthy living and managing risks.N terminal Pro brain natriuretic peptide(NT-proBNP) was found to be elevated mainly inacute and chronic heart failure. In this studyweevaluated the plasma levels of NT-proBNP in patients with type 2 DM without Any chronic disease or overt heart failure, in comparison with healthy control group. Methods: This study was conducted on 110 subjects classified into two groups: 55 Type 2 DM with no known chronic disease and 55 healthy subjects as a control group. The patients were enrolled during their regular follow up in the outpatient clinic in Kasr Al Ainy Hospital, Cairo University. Patients with smoking history or chronic illness (hepatic, renal, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, autoimmune disorders or cardiovascular disease) were excluded. Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and NT-proBNP were measured in both groups. Results: There was no significant difference in the age distribution between the cases and healthy controls (47±11 VS 41±10 respectively). There was a highly significant difference in the mean NT-proBNP levels between the cases and the control group(356±942 VS 99±54 respectively)(p= <0.001). Conclusion: Plasma level of NT proBNP w as elevated in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus without any other chronic disease.
