This work/action focuses on the physico-chemical characterisation of municipal solid waste (MSW) from two municipalities in Chlef, in order to create a database of MSW and thus reduce the costs associated with traditional waste disposal. In this context, two communes (Chlef and Oued Sly) which dump their waste at the Meknassa technical landfill centre were chosen. To this end, samples of waste per sector over a period of two years were taken directly from the landfill. The method used in this study is MODECOM, which consists of analysing the physico-chemical parameters of the waste, such as sorting by size and category, moisture content, pH and organic matter content. The physical characterisation showed that the waste contained 59.33% putrescibles, 5.27% paper and cardboard, 10.11% plastics, 22.58% miscellaneous and 2.71% fine matter (Ø ≤ 20 mm). Chemical characterisation of putrescibles, paper-cardboard and fines reveals that their organic matter content is around 71%, with a moisture content of 53.59%. In the light of these results, putrescibles, paper and cardboard and fine matter were treated by composting. This preliminary study will provide the local authorities with more accurate information to help them improve the management and treatment of MSW in Chlef and neighboring wilayas.
