Prevalence Of Hepatitis A & E Virus Infections Among Acute Hepatitis Patients – A Study From A Rural Medical College And Hospital In Southern West Bengal.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION- Enterically transmitted hepatitis A and E viruses are a major cause of epidemic and acute sporadic hepatitis in many developing countries in the world. Hepatitis A virus (HAV)often causes epidemics and frequent outbreaks, specially in India where there is over-crowding and lack of proper sanitation. Hepatitis E virus (HEV)is predominantly found in developing countries withinadequatesanitation facilities and it can cause fulminant hepatitis, particularly in pregnant women. Serological detection of IgM antibodies to HAV and HEV is the choice of diagnosis for acute infections. AIMS1. To find out the prevalence of Hepatitis A and Hepatitis E virus infections among acute hepatitis cases by IgM ELISA. 2. To analyse the seroprevalence of Hepatitis A and E with the biochemical markers of acute hepatitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS- 5 ml of clotted blood drawn aseptically from acute hepatitis patients and the serum were tested for anti HAV and anti HEV IgM antibodies by ELISA. RESULTS- Of the 98 serum samples tested, the prevalence of HAV was found to be 27.55% and that of HEV was 7.14%.The highest prevalence of HAV infection occurred in the age group 21-30 years while the prevalence of HEV was nearly equal in most age groups. For both HAV and HEV majority cases belonged to urban areas. Total serum bilirubin levels as well as liver enzymes showed elevation in both HAV and HEV. CONCLUSION- Enterically transmitted hepatitis is a major health problem highly prevalent throughout the world especially in developing countries. Since they are food-borne and water-borne infections, preventive measures like good sanitation and hygiene practices and clean and safe drinking water should be considered to ensure lowest exposure rate.
