Prospection of bioinsecticidal effect of Artemicia herba-alba against Blattella germanica.

Abstract

Pesticide research is currently focused on toxic comestible plants, that are efficient against pests. Artemicia herba-alba is species of Asteraceae family, called commonly in Algeria « Chih ». Previous research has demonstrated its natural bioinsecticidal properties against several pests. Blattella germanica (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae) is the most associated human cockroach. It presents an important problem for health, as it is frequently the cause of several infectious diseases. This scourge has largely controlled by conventional insecticides that have polluted environment. Consequently, the conception of an eco-friendly alternatives for controlling this pest is become necessary. This present study evaluates the bioinsecticidal effectiveness of Artemisia herba-alba in controlling of B. germanica. The extract of leaves of this plant was experimented by ingestion at newly emerged adults. The toxicity was evaluated, estimating the lethal doses (LD50) which are 4,39 mg/insect after 72 hours of exposure. After this preliminary study, the effects of LD50 were evaluated on reproductive process at various ages of the gonadotrophic cycle (0, 2, 4 and 6 days), on morphometry settings (number of oocytes per pair of ovaries and basal oocyte size). Results showed that LD50 significantly (P=0,001) reduces 66 % of number of oocytes per pair ovaries. Consequently, there was an approximate decrease of (0.010 ± 0.001) mm3 in volume of basal oocytes as compared to controls after day 6 of the gonadotrophic cycle. Indeed, A. herba-alba exhibited a strong insecticidal activity and consequently alter reproduction and impact oogenesis and maturation of the basal oocyte against this pest.
