Spatial Analysis of Air Pollution in Bhubaneswar City Using GIS for Sustainable Urban Planning

Abstract

Territorial dynamics related to air pollution is a significant and growing concern in urban areas. A GIS approach was utilized in applying of French Onyon technique onto air pollution studies to indispensable attempts prevail occurrence and nonoccurrence level for distribution process over Bhubaneswar City, Odisha, India This study summarizes the results of ambient air quality data (from Academic year 2023, collected at six monitoring stations in the city) used to test for seasonal variation among other variables such as yearly maximum-minimum values and levels, annual average concentrations, standard deviation; Air Quality Index (AQI). The results are presented, which show that total suspended particulate matter (SPM), PM10 and PM2.5) Reads were beyond the permissible limits during Pre-monsoons. AQI was calculated at each monitoring station and showed that all places were in the range of polluted. Analysis in GIS provided a spatial estimate of high concentration localities and localized areas based on any individual pollutant. These results showed that traffic network, road conditions, population density and vehicle movement frequency play important roles in the air quality deterioration of study area. This work also shows the power of GIS in air quality assessment and suggests an important note for future sustainable urban planning actions to improve against pollution at Bhubaneswar-City, India.
