Study of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology of Thyroid lesions using The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology along with TIRADS and Histopathological correlation

Abstract

Background: Thyroid gland is the largest endocrine organ. It can harbour inflammatory diseases as well as neoplastic tumours, both benign and malignant. Fine needle aspiration cytology(FNAC) and Ultrasonography (USG) are the two baseline investigations which are recommended in the diagnosis of such cases. The Bethesda system of reporting thyroid cytopathology (TBSRTC) is commonly used to standardise the reporting of thyroid lesions by FNA. It is important to correlate TBSRTC with TIRADS scoring system used by radiologists and the final histopathological diagnosis which is often considered gold standard. Objective: To analyse the cytological features of thyroid fine needle aspiration smears and categorise them by The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology along with TIRADS and Histopathological correlation. Materials and methods: We conducted a retrospective study. Patients with clinically palpable thyroid swellings, irrespective of their age and sex, who underwent ultrasound imaging with subsequent FNAC and surgery for the same were included in this study. Patient’s demographic data was collected from the hospital software. The FNAC, radiological and histopathology reports were collected and analyzed. TBSRTC category correlated with TIRADS score and the histopathological diagnosis. Results: Sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of TBSRTC and TIRADS are calculated. Agreement between TBSRTC and TIRADS are found in 75% of cases. Results of our study is comparable with other studies.
