Background: Musculoskeletal health is an important component of healthy aging. Bone and muscle are the two most important components of the musculoskeletal system. Though age-related changes in both bone and muscle structure do occur, diseases that either directly or indirectly affect bone and muscle, and age associated lifestyle changes, have a greater impact on bone and muscle health. Poor bone and muscle integrity and strength predispose older adults to impaired function, disability, dependency, falls, pain, high medical care costs and death. Osteoporosis and sarcopenia are common in older adults.
