The effect of copper sulfate overexposure on lipid profile of rabbits “Cuniculus lepus” with and without ascorbic acid

Abstract

Although copper has a long history of use in various therapeutic forms, there are now cases of intoxication associated with exposure to varying concentrations of this element. This study was conducted to assess the impact of copper sulphate (CuSO4) on lipid profile, including total cholesterol and triglycerides, as well as to examine the antioxidant protective role of ascorbic acid. For this purpose, 32 local male and adult rabbits “Cuniculus lepus” were divided into four groups of 8 animals each (n=8): one control group and three treated groups. During the study, two separate oral doses were administered over a 35-day period: 100 mg/kg for group 2 and 200 mg/kg for group 3. The group 4 received a treatment combining equal doses of 200 mg/kg of CuSO4 and ascorbic acid. Our results indicated that there was no significant difference in cholesterol levels between groups, as well as triglycerides for the 3 groups (1,2 and 3), with a significant increase in their rate in the group co-administered by ascorbic acid compared to the control and group 1 groups. in our study, the doses were not sufficient to cause toxicity, so the protective role of ascorbic acid was neither proven nor denied.
