The effect of the material type of dental prostheses on oral microbiome: A systematic review

Abstract

Dental prostheses are commonly used to replace missing teeth and improve both the appearance and function of the oral cavity. On the other hand, the materials used in these prostheses, which include zirconia, titanium, lithium disilicate ceramics, etc., have a direct effect on the oral microbiome. When these materials are used in the oral cavity, they help maintain a balance of microbes and prevent oral diseases. Several studies in this regard show that zirconia can create less biofilm compared to titanium and lithium disilicate ceramics. However, although titanium is highly biocompatible when exposed to oral bacteria such as streptococcus mutans, can be corroded and cause changes in the composition of the oral microbiome. In addition, lithium disilicate ceramic prostheses, which have microbial permeability, can not only cause secondary caries but can also cause gingivitis. This can lead to loss of oral microbiome balance. The mentioned microbial changes can also have systemic consequences, including an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, etc. As a result, it is very important to choose dental prosthesis materials based on the characteristics of biofilm ability and their role in the oral microbiome. In this regard, there is a need for more research for a longterm investigation, i.e. the of these substances on the oral microbiome and systemic health of people, so that more complete information can be obtained in this field.
