Abstract

The interplay between systemic health and oral diseases is a complex and bidirectional relationship that significantly impacts overall health outcomes. This review explores how systemic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, respiratory diseases, osteoporosis, and autoimmune diseases influence oral health. It highlights the critical role of dental professionals in identifying oral manifestations of these systemic conditions, providing preventive care, and collaborating with other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive patient management. Preventive strategies, including education and awareness programs, regular dental check-ups, fluoride and sealant programs, and tobacco cessation efforts, are essential for mitigating the impact of oral diseases on systemic health. Public health initiatives aimed at improving access to dental care and reducing health disparities are also discussed. Furthermore, the review emphasizes the importance of emerging trends and innovative technologies, such as salivary diagnostics and artificial intelligence, in advancing our understanding of oral-systemic health connections. Future research needs to focus on longitudinal studies, the socio-economic determinants of health, and the impact of lifestyle factors on oral and systemic health. By integrating oral health into broader healthcare policies and practices, we can enhance overall health outcomes and reduce disparities.
