The Protective Effect of Matcha and Chia Seeds on Nephrotoxicity and Hepatotoxicity in Cisplatin-Induced Male Albino Rat (Biochemical and Histological Studies)

Abstract

Background: Cisplatin is a widely used chemotherapeutic agent effective against various cancers, but its use is often limited by its nephrotoxic and hepatotoxic side effects. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the protective effects of Matcha and Chia seeds on Cisplatin-induced liver and kidney damage in male albino rats. Methods: Male albino rats were divided into four groups: control, Cisplatin alone, Cisplatin with Matcha, and Cisplatin with Chia seeds. Cisplatin was administered intraperitoneally at 6 mg/kg body weight on day 6. Matcha (150 g/day) and Chia seeds (150 g/day) were administered orally for ten days. Serum levels of ALT, AST, urea, creatinine, total protein, albumin, globulin, and albumin/globulin ratio were measured and liver and kidney were examined histologically to assess liver and kidney function. Results: The Cisplatin-treated group exhibited significant increases in ALT, AST, urea, and creatinine levels and histological examination, indicating liver and kidney damage. Co-administration of Matcha significantly reduced these markers, suggesting a protective effect against Cisplatin-induced toxicity. Chia seeds also showed a protective effect, though less pronounced than Matcha, as evidenced by lower levels of these biochemical markers compared to the Cisplatin-only group. Conclusion: Matcha and Chia seeds demonstrate protective effects against Cisplatin-induced hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity, likely due to their antioxidant properties.
