TRENDS IN DIABETIC RETINOPATHY SEVERITY

Abstract

Objective: To assess the trends reported for diabetic retinopathy in patients seeking consultation for diabetes in tertiary care hospital, Sindh. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional, prospective study, data was collected from the Institute of Ophthalmology, LUMHS. The data was collected from 16th August 2024 till 15th December 2024, adult population diagnosed with Diabetes mellitus (Type I & II) were screened for diabetic retinopathy and severity was reported using Diabetic retinopathy severity scale, the required sample size was 140. A statistical package of social sciences was used to enter, sort and analyze the data, continuous variables were reported as mean and standard deviation while categorical variables were reported as frequency and percentages. Results: Conclusion: Total 140 patients were enrolled in the study, with mean age of 36.8 ± 9.1 years.. Diabetic retinopathy was diagnosed in 83 (59.2%) patients, while severity of DR was identified as proliferative DR in 19 (13.5%) patients while Non-Proliferative DR was reported as mild 31 (22.1%), moderate 24 (17.1%) and severe 9 (6.4%) respectively. DM diagnosed for > 3 month reported higher frequency of DR with 58 patients, p-value was 0.331. While medical history of HTN had higher prevalence of DR with 39 patients, p-value of 0.008. The findings underscore the significant role of hypertension in the development of DR, with a notable prevalence of DR in patients with a history of hypertension.
