Objective: To study the effects of a 3-month walking program on body composition, cardiovascular parameters, blood sugar and VO2 max in sedentary Senegalese women aged between 40 and 50. Methods: We assessed weight, fat mass, lean mass, fat percentage, body mass index, muscle circumferences (thigh, calf, arm), resting heart rate, blood pressure, blood glucose and maximum oxygen consumption before and after a 3-month walking programme. The programme consisted of 3 one-hour sessions per week, performed at a comfortable speed. Results: After 12 weeks of walking, we observed a slight decrease in all the variables studied, with the exception of blood sugar, lean body mass and VO2 max. However, this reduction was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Our results suggest that one-hour walking sessions at a comfortable speed, three times a week for 3 months, may not be sufficient to induce significant changes in the variables assessed above in sedentary Senegalese women aged between 40 and 50.
